The Children's Book Council of Australia Shortlist of the 1998 Book of the Year Awards consisting of six titles in each of the four categories, was released at Government House, South Australia, on 14th April 1998. The Awards presented in Adelaide on 21st August 1998, the beginning of Children's Book Week. The theme for 1998 was 'Put Yourself in the Picture'.
Publishers submitted 343 books. From these the judges selected 115 which they consider worthy of recognition and consideration for a variety of purposes: inclusion in the public and school libraries; for individual reading; for translation or for inclusion in international library collections.
