Nan Chauncy Recipient 2010

Lesley Reece, Director of the Fremantle Children’s Literature Centre, has been announced winner of the Nan Chauncy Award for 2010.

The Nan Chauncy Award is presented biennially by The Children’s Book Council of Australia to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to children’s literature in Australia.  Nan Chauncy, after whom the award was named, was a pioneering Australian author, one of the first to write children’s books with distinctive Australian characters and settings.

The Award recognises, in particular, Ms Reece’s drive and enthusiasm in establishing the Fremantle Children’s Literature Centre in 1992. The Literature Centre exhibits original art from Australian picture books, runs classes for both primary and secondary students, supports illustrators through promotion of their work, and includes an apartment for artists-in-residence.  Ms Reece extended the FCLC’s program to include remote regions of WA, and special days to nurture young writers.  Through her pioneering endeavours she has enabled thousands of students, as well as parents and teachers, to achieve a deeper understanding of the art of the picture book, and of literature in general, whilst promoting and providing practical support to authors and illustrators.

Ms Reece is a most worthy recipient of this prestigious award.
